Understanding Hepatitis B Antibody Test

Hepatitis B is a disease caused by a viral virus that can kill a large number of liver cells and damage liver functions. According to estimates, there are about 600,000 Hepatitis B carriers in Hong Kong, but nearly half of the patients do not know that they have been infected. If you are afraid that you are an invisible carrier without knowing it, you can take a blood test to check the Hepatitis B surface antigen and surface antibody. Early treatment can reduce the chance of serious complications and death.

What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by Hepatitis B virus infection. If the virus cannot be clearly completely, one will become a chronic carrier (chronic Hepatitis B) for life. Chronic Hepatitis B can lead to acute liver failure and even cirrhosis or liver cancer. It is worth noting that after being infected with the virus, patients can remain asymptomatic until the liver is severely damaged.

Hepatitis B examination is very important

Statistics shows that 8% of Hong Kong’s population are Hepatitis B carriers. To know whether you are a carrier of Hepatitis B, or whether the antibody index of Hepatitis B in your body is sufficient, you can take a preliminary blood test. The blood test can detect Hepatitis B surface antigen and surface antibody. If antigen is detected, that means one is infected with Hepatitis B; if antibody is detected, there is no need for another injection.

Hepatitis B Antigen v.s. Antibody

Those without antibodies nor antigens should vaccinated themselves against Hepatitis B as soon as possible
According to the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection, Hepatitis B virus can cause acute hepatitis. Inoculation of Hepatitis B vaccine is the most effective way to prevent Hepatitis B. The vaccination procedure includes 3 doses of vaccine. The three doses should be completed within six months, and more than 95% of healthy people can produce enough antibodies to resist Hepatitis B virus infection for a long time.
